I remember leading a walking tour for a Dutch traveler who was looking for fridge magnets. I told him he had to visit Toko Meru.
It’s a shop that sells work from artists in Malang and other cities. I’ve been a few times, and every time I stop by, there’s always something new to discover: from postcards and fridge magnets to quirky keychains and more.

"We’re home to more than 80 artists now," the cashier told me. "Everything you see here is carefully curated."
I can even see the artists' Instagram on the products, turning a simple purchase into a way to connect with the maker.
One of my favorites is Bits & Bobs by Angela Kurniawan who makes really cool items inspired by everyday Indonesian life, like Warteg or Indomie illustrations, and I love how she uses humor and a minimalist design to showcase local culture.

I also love the work by @Shadeoflilac_. As someone with a background in architecture, I really appreciate how these stickers turn everyday street views into art.
Leaving Toko Meru, I felt a new appreciation for the little details of the city. It’s a special place that turns everyday things, like a bowl of noodles or a simple building, into beautiful art. It reminded me that there is beauty all around us, if we just take the time to look.
