"Klojen doesn't try to be the biggest. It’s small, clean, and easy to walk through," I told some Dutch tourists when they asked why I recommend Klojen Market over Pasar Besar.
They were at Jodipan Rainbow Village in the morning, planning their next move. Like most tourists, they had Pasar Besar on their list because it's famous and massive. But massive can be exhausting.
"Unlike the massive Pasar Besar," I added, "Klojen is intimate."
I wanted to explain more, but I could tell they had already decided: they went to Pasar Besar. They didn't realize that the best parts of Malang are not always the biggest; they are the ones we're trying to save.
While they battle the crowds and the chaos of the city's biggest market, let’s look at the one they missed. Because if you want to see how Malang is actually changing for the better, you have to look at Klojen.

A Success Story in Revitalization
Klojen is the second market in Malang to be revitalized, following Oro-Oro Dowo. It is the perfect example of how an old space can become fresh and active again.
Before 2018, Pasar Klojen was known for being dirty, messy, and muddy. It had the same problems as many old markets where people only visited for groceries. Today, it is a bright and organized "lifestyle hub." The government didn't just fix the building; they changed how the market works. By using a '50-50' plan, they protected the original sellers and welcomed trendy new coffee shops and food stalls.

The Flavors of Indonesia
This is the place to truly taste the city. Klojen is where you can try so many traditional Indonesian foods, snacks, and drinks in one spot. Whether you want a heavy breakfast or just a piece of local jajan pasar (market cake), it’s all right there and easy to find. The best time to visit is between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM to truly experience the authentic hustle and bustle of a traditional market.

Perfectly Located
Klojen is in a great spot because everything is close. It’s sitting right in the middle of everything. It is just a short walk or ride from:
Alun-Alun Tugu (the iconic round park)
Malang Kotabaru Train Station
and Jodipan Rainbow Village
So, if you are in Malang and looking for a traditional market that won't leave you feeling stressed and exhausted, I recommend Klojen Market. It’s the city’s best-kept secret, even if some tourists are too busy looking at their maps to see it.
